FiveM Clothing Not Showing? Fixes for Invisible Clothes

You added a new clothing pack, restarted, opened the clothing menu… and nothing. The items are missing, invisible, all black, or only you can see them. This is one of the most common problems on FiveM servers, and it almost always comes down to one of a handful of causes.

This guide goes through them in the order that fixes most servers fastest. Start at the top and stop when your clothes show up.

Quick fix table

What you seeMost likely causeGo to

1. Do a full server restart

Clothing is streamed to players when they connect. Restarting only the resource (ensure or restart in the console) often isn't enough for new clothing.

  • Stop the server completely and start it again.
  • Every player, including you, has to disconnect and reconnect after the restart.

If the items show up now, you're done.

2. Clear the server cache

The server keeps a cache of streamed files. After adding, removing or replacing clothing files, an old cache can keep serving the previous version.

  1. Stop the server.
  2. Delete the cache folder in your server data folder (next to resources and server.cfg).
  3. Start the server. The cache is rebuilt automatically.

3. Clear the client cache (for players)

Players can keep old copies of streamed files too. If one player sees the problem and others don't, have them clear their FiveM cache:

  1. Close FiveM.
  2. Right-click the FiveM shortcut → Open file location, then open FiveM.app → data.
  3. Delete the cache, server-cache and server-cache-priv folders. Leave the game-storage folder alone.
  4. Start FiveM and reconnect.

4. Check that the resource actually starts

A typo in server.cfg or a broken folder structure means the pack never loads.

  • Check server.cfg has an ensure line for each clothing resource, spelled exactly like the folder name. Some packs come as several resources. Our FiveM Clothing Package v2, for example, uses two:
ensure fz_clothing_x
ensure fz_clothing_y
  • Watch the server console while it starts. Errors like "Couldn't find resource" or "Could not load resource" point to a wrong name or a missing fxmanifest.lua.
  • Open the resource folder: there should be an fxmanifest.lua and a stream folder with the clothing files. If the files sit one folder too deep (a common result of extracting a zip into a folder with the same name), move them up.

5. Match the game build

Clothing made for a newer GTA game build can show up invisible on a server that runs an older build, and the other way round.

  • Check which build the pack needs (it's usually on the product page or in the readme).
  • In server.cfg, set the build with sv_enforceGameBuild, for example:
set sv_enforceGameBuild 3258
  • Restart fully after changing it (step 1). Players download the matching game files on their next connect.

6. Check you haven't hit the clothing limit

Each game build has a limit on how many custom clothing items (drawables) and clothing metadata files the freemode peds can load. Go over it and the extra items simply don't load, or the game throws errors when creating characters.

Signs you've hit the limit:

  • Only the first part of a pack works, or a pack that worked stops working after you add another one.
  • Players get errors or crashes while creating or loading a character.

How to fix it:

  • Remove packs you no longer use. Old test packs and duplicates add up quickly.
  • Prefer one large, well-organised pack over many small ones.
  • Check the limits for your game build in the FiveM documentation before adding more.

Our clothing pack optimization guide goes into more detail on keeping packs small.

7. Check the file names

FiveM matches each clothing model to its textures by file name. If a pack was renamed, merged by hand or edited, a mismatch makes items invisible.

  • Male items start with mp_m_freemode_01, female items with mp_f_freemode_01. A file with the wrong prefix won't show up on that character.
  • Each model file (.ydd) needs its texture file (.ytd) with matching numbering.
  • If you merged packs yourself, two files with the same name overwrite each other. Keep each pack in its own resource instead.

If you bought the pack and didn't change anything, this is rarely the cause. Ask the seller for a fresh download.

8. Fix black or flickering textures

When clothing shows up but looks solid black, blurry or flickers, the player's game is running out of texture memory. It's a client-side issue.

Players can try:

  • Lower Texture Quality in GTA's graphics settings, or turn on Extended Texture Budget under Advanced Graphics and raise it.
  • Close other heavy programs (browsers with many tabs, recording software).
  • Clear the client cache (step 3).

9. Visible to you but not to other players

If you can see your new outfit but others see you in default clothes (or the other way round):

  • Other players need to reconnect after a restart, so their game downloads the new files.
  • If only a few players are affected, their client cache is the usual cause (step 3).
  • Very large packs can take a while to download on slow connections. Players who join while still downloading may see default clothes until they reconnect.

10. Check your clothing menu

Most modern menus pick up new items automatically. If the files load but the menu doesn't list them:

  • illenium-appearance and fivem-appearance read the available items from the game, so new items should appear after a full restart.
  • qb-clothing and older menus can have limits or category settings in their config. Check that the categories your pack adds aren't capped there.
  • Make sure the clothing resources start before your clothing menu in server.cfg.

Still not working?

If you've been through every step and the clothes still don't show:

  • Note your game build, clothing menu, framework and the exact error from the server console (F8 for client errors).
  • If it's one of our packs, open a ticket on our Discord with that information and we'll help you get it working.
